6/29/2023 0 Comments No Hope for Gomez! by Graham ParkeGomez takes most of this in stride, and continues along the path of true love with the sexy Dr Hargrove by agreeing to become her ‘stalker-stalker’. No hope for Gomez!, written by Graham Parke, is a brilliantly funny look into the life of an average guy, living an average life, except for the fact he’s part of a mysterious drug trail that may or may not have deadly side effects, owns a antique store that attracts men in sombreros and fake moustaches who are interested in buying old tax forms from 1984, and has a wannabe writer neighbour who writes rambling novels that seemingly defy the common practice of having a beginning middle and end, but have lots of elves. Convincing evidence to support either allegation has yet to be produced. He has been described as both a humanitarian and a pathological liar. OBS Staff member Karolina had the opportunity to interview Graham Parke & Warren Baxter! Check out her review for ‘No Hope for Gomez!’ HEREĪ little about Graham Parke: Graham Parke is responsible for a number of technical publications and has recently patented a self-folding map.

We follow Robin Swift, a boy from Canton, China who is saved from a deadly illness by Professor Lovell. The story takes place in the historic city of Oxford in the early 1800s. I decided that it would be my winter break read and ended up speeding through this book in two weeks because of the captivating story, characters, narratives and themes that it beautifully displays. As a big fan of their previous works, I picked up “Babel” not long after it hit the shelves and prepared myself to take on this 550-page read. Typically referred to as “Babel,” Kuang’s fourth book was released in August 2022. So naturally, here is my spoiler-free review of the New York Times Bestseller “Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution” by R.F. Not only did my book list grow exponentially because of this, but one book skyrocketed to the top of my list due to the amount of chatter it caused. With BookTok still booming on TikTok, creators spent the end of 2022 raving about their favorite reads of the year. Strong language includes "c-t," "c-k," "f-k," and "s-t." Sexual content includes a man mentioning a woman grabbing his penis like a toy and "entering" the woman, a woman tweaking her own nipple while panting in a public place, some nonsexual nudity, and mild romantic feelings. Rare fantasy violence includes people being killed by magic power and a fantasy being who drains a child's blood. Enslaved people are forced or coerced to perform intercourse and oral sex. Nothing's directly narrated, but rape, including gang rape and child rape pedophilia and sex trafficking, including of children, are frequently mentioned. Blood and pain are described with mild gore, including a detailed description of gouging someone's eyes with thumbs. Violence is mostly in the real world using swords, knives, arrows, and maces. Parents need to know that Erika Johansen's The Queen of the Tearling is the first in a fantasy series about a 19-year-old queen who's inherited a corrupt kingdom on the brink of ruin. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Just like me by nancy cavanaughAlthough I am not Chinese, her dad is, and I wanted her to relate to both sides of the family. When my daughter was growing up, I wanted to make sure she connected to her Chinese heritage. My book tells of two fictional brothers one adapts rather quickly and the other has a much harder time. While researching the Chinese Educational Mission, I was fascinated to learn that many of the boys loved playing baseball-despite the requirement that they wear their hair in a braid. This one takes place in the 1870s, when China’s government sent 120 boys to New England to study English and technology for fifteen years. My newest book, The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball (age 10 and up), tells how another Chinese child adapted to life in America. How about you? What books with themes of China have you or your children enjoyed? Please fill out the Rafflecopter at the bottom to enter. We are also giving away 3 copies of The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball. She presents ten middle grade chapter books to learn about Chinese culture. Please welcome author Dori Jones Yang, whose latest book is The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Dragon hoopsIt wasn’t like some graphic novels which are just meant to make people laugh and read for fun, but it had a purpose. I would give this graphic novel a 10/10 rating because it had a plot to it. Dragon Hoops is a very entertaining book, and if you are someone who enjoys reading graphic novels, you will definitely like this book! Since the book was written as a graphic novel, it was easier and quicker to read. As I read this book, I really enjoyed getting a graphic novelist’s perspective on the team. I recommend this book to any sports enthusiast. Ivan Rabb, Paris Austin, Alex Zhao, and other players are actually real people and not just made-up characters! Gene Luen Yang, the author of Dragon Hoops, wrote about a true story from his time at Bishop O’Dowd High School. There are ups and downs, but they get through those negative moments as a team. The Dragons experience defeats and victories along their path to the state championship game. After losing in the state championship game for multiple years, the Dragons are fed up and ready to make some noise! Their roster is looking stacked, with Paris Austin and Ivan Rabb leading the way as the star players. Dragon Hoops is a graphic novel that follows the Bishop O’Dowd Dragons’ journey to winning the state championship. 6/29/2023 0 Comments The pants project bookThe moms deserve a book of their own – they have interesting stories – and the brother, a minor character, behaves like any little brother does.Ī great story with great characters who come to life in the brief time we get to read their stories in this fabulous book.Ī copy of this book was provided by Raincoast Books for an honest review.
